Friends Of Helmsley Pool - We Need You!
A new Charity was formed in 2019-20 (Reg No 1184090) to operate the pool which is leased from another local charity at a peppercorn rent. The Pool is operated by volunteers apart from the Lifeguards and plant operator who are paid. Whilst for the past 3 years the Pool has ‘washed its face’ in operational costs with the Pool celebrating its 50th anniversary last year, we are still facing ‘once in a generation’ capital investment costs. We have split the work into 3 phases, see below with phase 1 now being complete, and we really need your continuing support and donations to complete our task.
We are registered for Gift Aid which means if you pay tax, we will get it back on your donation. This applies to online donations as well as those given locally.
We do however have a full complement for 2020.
PHASE 1 – Pool Tank & Surround
The photos show the work done to the pool Oct 2018-May 2019 – https://photos.app.goo.gl/YksM47YDRo1oEYAE6
- Pool tank re-rendered and retiled
- New pool apron – vulcanised rubber
- Tree Stumps removed and lawns re-turfed
- New Pool Fence
- New Accessible Pool Hoist
Prior to this we had an unattractive and crumbling concentre fence, a cracked concrete apron and a very leaky pool take with consequent high water bills.
This cost circa £200K and the funding came from the following sources
- Trading Surpluses
- EU Funding
- Ryedale District Council – a ‘golden goodbye’ capital grant to replace their annual grant
- Individual Donations
- Corporate / Group Donations eg Ryedale Lions & Hedley Trust for the pool hoist
PHASE 2 – The Building
Whilst in recent years we have added a pitched roof to the original 1969 flat roof the building – (effectively a wooden hut) is very tired and we need the following
- Modern Changing Rooms
- Accessible Changing Rooms
- Hot Showers
- Heating (for when we do cool pool)
- Improved Reception and maybe even a rooftop café!
PHASE 3 – The Plant and Renewable Energy
Much of the pools plant still uses imperial fixings rather than metric, the pool is heated by an oil fuelled boiler and air source heat exchanger. Moving forward we would like to heat the pool using renewable energy – potentially solar thermal panels and overall the pools pumps and filters etc
Register as a Friend
Please ‘register’ as a ‘friend’ so we can keep you up to date with developments at the pool, events and fundraising.
Here are some of the areas that we need help in:-
Can you bake a cake? Lidos across the country get much needed revenue from the sale of teas & cakes. We are expanding our catering facilities this year – please support the pool by baking a cake!
Be a ‘Heatwave Helper’ Every so often we get a sustained period of hot weather and the pool can hold up to 100 people. When this happens our team need help in the following areas
- Car Parking (Overflow)
- Queue management and information
- Changing Room Upkeep
- Sale of Refreshments
Aquathlon Marshall – For the first 3 Tuesdays in August we run our ‘Swim & Run’ race series. We always need plenty of help marshalling the run route and counting the swimmers’ lengths. Volunteer and a child / friend can race for free!
Volunteer Lifeguards – Our staff are mainly University Students returning home for the summer holidays to work at the pool. This is one of the reasons we have to close at the beginning of September as they prepare to return to their studies. The weather in Helmsley is usually very good in September and we have lots of visitors. We would like to extend our opening into September so let us know if you would like to be a volunteer lifeguard and we will run a training course at the pool at the beginning of the season.
Got an idea for an event? Events are a great way of introducing people to the pool and for generating funds, so whether it’s aqua tai chi to water volleyball or a fundraiser – let’s do it.
Securing Funding – Whilst the pool is sustainable in terms of day to day costs – we need to secure some grants to help us with the major projects
We have a continual need for lifeguards for the summer. We do however have a full complement for 2019. If you live locally and are going to University or College full time and want to be considered for a summer job as a lifeguard at the Pool in future please use the contact form on this page to get in touch and we’ll get back to you with some details.. Bursaries are available from the pool to obtain your National Pool Lifeguard Qualification for which we ask that you serve two summer seasons at the Pool.
We also need a trainee/experienced pool plant operator. This is a PAID position. Please contact us for further details.
